Devotions - Acts 6:15
Acts 6:15
Years ago Peter Berger wrote a book called Rumors of Angels. “Angels,” he says, ”are God’s messengers or “signals. Today, transcendence has been reduced to a rumor . . .but we can set out to explore these rumors and, perhaps, follow them to their source.” He goes on to say that we may not see angels, but occasionally might find a feather. This is reminiscent of Stephen before the Jewish Council who "all saw that his face looked like the face of angel (Acts 6:15). Over the last 25 years or so, I have returned time and again to this idea. What are some of the rumors? The church is one. With all of our faults, we still remain a beacon in a self-centered world. If all we do is look at the success oriented, people denying, church folk we will not see any angel feathers or faces like angels. But if we look at those church people who, for example, care for the homeless, visit the shut-ins, teach the young, we have at least a rumor of something more than the here and now. And we might even see a feather.
